Moving money and securities between financial institutions still involves a surprising amount of waiting, checking and reconciling. The screens look modern. Some of the plumbing has been around long enough to deserve a retirement party.

Canton is trying to improve that plumbing. It connects financial applications so they can coordinate transactions while keeping sensitive information visible only to the appropriate participants.

Imagine exchanging a bond for payment in one coordinated transaction, with both sides completing together. Less uncertainty, fewer disconnected records and more useful collateral are compelling goals. [Canton’s explanation of the network](https://www.canton.network/faq?ref=hayabusaresearch.com) describes the architecture behind them.

**Canton Coin, or CC, helps pay for and reward the network’s shared infrastructure. Owning it is a separate investment decision from admiring that infrastructure.**

The case for owning CC is that Canton becomes useful enough to create growing demand to use and retain its token—and that today’s price underestimates that future.

Our current assessment is **WATCH for new capital**. That investment thesis is plausible. We do not yet have enough evidence to say the prospective return compensates for the risks at the reference price.

## First, What Are You Buying?

Three things are easy to mix up.

**Canton** is the wider network connecting applications.

The **Global Synchronizer** is shared infrastructure that helps connected participants coordinate transactions. Canton applications can also use other synchronizers, including private ones.

**CC** is the token used to pay for Global Synchronizer traffic and reward eligible network contributors. It is not a share in Digital Asset, the technology company, or in the banks and other businesses using Canton. [Canton FAQ](https://www.canton.network/faq?ref=hayabusaresearch.com), [CC whitepaper](https://www.canton.network/hubfs/Canton%20Network%20Files/whitepapers/Canton%20Coin%20%20-%20MiCA%20Whitepaper.pdf?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

That means an institution can benefit from Canton without passing its profits to CC holders. A large financial transaction also does not produce a token fee equal to a percentage of its face value: Global Synchronizer traffic charges relate to data and delivery costs. [Traffic documentation](https://docs.global.canton.network.sync.global/background/tokenomics/traffic%5Ftokenomics.html?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

The investment question is how much useful activity creates demand for CC, who captures the benefits and what we are paying for that exposure.

## Why Canton Deserves Attention

Privacy and coordinated settlement solve practical problems for regulated institutions. A shared system becomes more useful when more relevant assets, counterparties and applications connect to it. That is the potential network effect: useful connections encouraging further use.

There is evidence beyond demonstrations. In July, DTCC reported production transactions involving more than 30 firms. The work used Canton and a private Besu network. It establishes real activity, while also showing that Canton is not the only route institutions are testing. [DTCC production announcement](https://www.dtcc.com/press-releases/2026/dtcc-turns-tokenization-into-reality?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

DTCC’s public material reviewed for this report still describes broader service availability as expected in October. We have not verified completion of that wider launch by our October 18 cutoff. Its contribution to CC fees remains unquantified. [DTCC’s production-trade overview](https://www.dtcc.com/products-and-services/digital-assets/tokenization/live-production-trades?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

The bullish opportunity is recurring use after the announcement: assets being financed, collateral moved and transactions settled because customers find the service valuable.

## How Value Can Reach CC

### 1\. Paying for Traffic Removes Coins

Participants purchase Global Synchronizer traffic capacity by burning CC—permanently removing the coins used for that purchase. Fees are expressed in dollars and converted into CC using the network’s conversion rate. [Traffic documentation](https://docs.global.canton.network.sync.global/background/tokenomics/traffic%5Ftokenomics.html?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

For holders, the benefit is indirect. More coins burned can improve supply dynamics, but new reward coins are minted too. Burns need to be assessed alongside total issuance.

There is also a price feedback. At a network conversion rate of $0.10, a $100 traffic purchase burns 1,000 CC. At $0.20, the same purchase burns 500 CC.

These are illustrative numbers, but the implication matters: rising usage does not translate mechanically into equally fast token-price growth.

### 2\. Useful Participation Earns Rewards

Eligible application and infrastructure participants can mint CC rewards. Those rewards compensate participation. Simply buying CC and leaving it in a wallet does not automatically entitle the owner to them. [Reward documentation](https://docs.global.canton.network.sync.global/background/tokenomics/overview%5Ftokenomics.html?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

This distinction is central. The network can help an application build a business while issuing additional tokens that passive holders must absorb.

Rewards can also help participants fund future traffic. Without tracing the funding, a large burn figure cannot tell us how much fresh customer money entered the system.

### 3\. Locking Creates a Reason to Hold Inventory

Some participants must maintain committed CC balances to preserve their status or reward weight. Featured-app requirements distinguish between non-issuers and asset issuers, with stated thresholds of 5 million and 25 million CC respectively. [CIP-0116](https://github.com/canton-foundation/cips/blob/main/cip-0116/cip-0116.md?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

This can support demand to hold coins. However, borrowed CC is allowed, and unlocking provisions exist. A new app does not necessarily buy its required coins on an exchange. [Featured-app locking FAQ](https://intro.canton.foundation/featured-app-locking-faq.html?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

The benefit is more than theoretical. Tradeweb Markets Inc. reported **1.3 billion CC subject to transfer restrictions at June 30, 2026**. That is a dated company disclosure, not a verified total for the network today. [Tradeweb’s Form 10-Q, pages 36–37](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1758730/000175873026000133/tw-20260630.htm?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

We do not subtract a headline locked balance from circulating supply to manufacture a smaller valuation denominator. Commitment rules, current balances, release schedules and technical enforcement are separate questions. The current Super Validator framework includes both staged enforcement and a future end to the locking requirement. [CIP-0105](https://github.com/canton-foundation/cips/blob/main/cip-0105/cip-0105.md?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

### 4\. Active Owners Can Build Businesses Around CC

Canton Strategic Holdings reports approximately **$1.3 million of second-quarter other revenue, largely from its locking service**. It commits its own CC for customers, retains ownership and receives compensation under commercial agreements. [Company results](https://www.cantonstrategic.com/news/canton-strategic-holdings-inc-releases-second-quarter-2026-financial-and-operational-results?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

That illustrates a route to income for an active service provider. It is revenue rather than profit, and it is not a dividend paid to ordinary CC holders. Participating in a lending or locking product would introduce its own contractual, liquidity and counterparty risks.

**For a passive CC holder, the main return remains a higher resale price. Utility demand, inventory demand and net supply can support it; none guarantees it.**

## What Is the Buyer Hoping For?

A buyer is making four connected bets.

**First, institutional interest becomes repeated, paid use.** The attractive outcome is customers returning because the service solves a problem. Announcements and asset totals need to become recurring demand for Global Synchronizer traffic.

**Second, more participants want or need to retain CC.** Operating balances and locking commitments can support demand to hold coins. The question is whether that demand expands meaningfully, rather than being met entirely by existing inventories and borrowed balances.

**Third, demand outgrows dilution and selling.** Burns increasingly offset issuance, while demand to acquire or retain CC absorbs coins that reward recipients and other owners choose to sell. Supply does not have to shrink for the price to rise. Demand does have to absorb the available supply at higher prices.

**Fourth, the market has underestimated that outcome.** Even if adoption succeeds, the buyer can overpay. The investment works only if future economics and market demand justify more than the price already assumes.

The strongest holding thesis sounds like this:

> “I expect Canton to become important financial infrastructure. I believe enough activity will require CC, and enough participants will retain it, to support a materially higher token value. Today’s price underestimates that outcome.”

That is a thesis we can investigate. It is more demanding than “large institutions are involved.”

For a passive holder, the expected payoff is mainly a higher resale price. There is no automatic payment for waiting. A separately contracted lending or locking service may generate income, but it introduces another business relationship and another set of risks.

## What the Numbers Actually Tell Us

At **19:07 UTC on October 18**, CCTools displayed a price of approximately **$0.0983**, reported circulating supply of **39.87 billion CC** and market capitalization near **$3.92 billion**. These are rounded third-party observations, not executable quotes. [CCTools snapshot](https://cctools.network/network?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

A token costing less than a dime can still carry a multibillion-dollar valuation. The decimal point is doing no analytical work for us.

For September, CCView reported:

- **645.8 million CC minted.**
- **442.6 million CC burned.**
- **About 203.2 million CC added on balance.**

That is approximately **69 coins burned for every 100 minted**. We could not independently replay the full ledger, so these remain attributed, provisional figures. [CCView’s September report](https://ccview.io/reports/canton-september-stats-2026/?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

Be careful with dashboard comparisons. A ratio of burns to **application rewards** covers a narrower pool than burns to **all issuance**. The two cannot establish the same conclusion about dilution. [CCTools metric labels](https://cctools.network/network?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

We also excluded a network-wide locking estimate whose annotations conflicted. The accompanying ledger documents that issue. Uncertain data should reduce our conviction, rather than disappear into a confident price target.

## What Would Justify a Higher Token Price?

CC has no documented automatic cash distribution to a passive holder. We therefore do not value it by treating network traffic purchases as shareholder earnings.

Nor do we use a 100-billion-coin lifetime maximum. Canton explicitly states that issuance has **no hard cap**. Future supply depends on minting and burning. [Canton’s supply explanation](https://www.canton.network/blog/canton-coin-how-should-we-think-about-fdv?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

Instead, start with a simple illustration. If September’s reported net issuance repeated for twelve months, supply would rise by about **6.1%** from the October 18 starting point.

Under that assumption:

- An unchanged total market value would mean a token price near **$0.0926**, about **5.8% lower**.
- A **20% token-price gain** would require total market value to rise approximately **27.3%**, to about **$4.99 billion**.
- An assumed **$6 billion** market value would imply roughly **$0.1418 per CC**.

These are calculations, not forecasts or fair-value targets. The workbook lets readers change issuance and market-value assumptions. September is one month, and both supply dynamics and investor demand can change.

The bull case requires evidence supporting the market-value assumption. A larger number in the spreadsheet does not explain why future buyers would pay it.

We cannot yet establish what proportion of traffic is funded by recurring outside customers, or a defensible valuation multiple for that demand. Those missing links are why we are not publishing a buy price.

## The Risks That Could Break the Thesis

**Canton adoption may bypass the token exposure we want.** Applications can use private synchronizers. Institutions can capture operational savings and application income without creating proportionate demand for CC on the Global Synchronizer. [Network architecture](https://www.canton.network/faq?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

**Incentives may overstate economic activity.** Canton has acknowledged weaknesses in self-reported app reward markers. CIP-0104 proposes measuring traffic directly, but the Foundation postponed the planned August 18 activation. Supporting software being available was explicitly not the same as activating the new rewards. We have not independently confirmed complete activation by our cutoff. [CIP-0104](https://github.com/canton-foundation/cips/blob/main/cip-0104/cip-0104.md?ref=hayabusaresearch.com), [Foundation update](https://forum.canton.network/t/cip-0104-mainnet-go-live-update/9071?ref=hayabusaresearch.com)

**Supply commitments can weaken or unwind.** Locks support inventory demand, but they are not permanent burns. Rules can change, commitments can expire and released coins can become available for sale. We do not have a reconciled current network-wide saleable-supply figure.

**Execution and custody still matter.** Reported daily turnover is not the amount an investor can sell at the displayed price. Before putting capital at risk, the relevant exchange depth, withdrawal route and custody arrangements need to work for the actual position size.

Our thesis would weaken materially if institutional activity grew while customer-funded Global Synchronizer demand stagnated, incentives dominated apparent usage, or issuance and releases persistently outran demand to use and hold CC.

## Buy, Hold, Watch or Pass?

**WATCH is our present view for new capital.** The opportunity merits attention, but the evidence does not yet establish an attractive entry price.

**The case for buying** would strengthen with a reconciled 30–90-day history of all-category minting and burning, evidence of repeat customer-funded use, and current lock and release data. We would then need a price that leaves room for disappointing adoption, rather than one that assumes the institutional story goes perfectly.

**The case for holding** is a continuing judgment that future demand for CC will make the prospective return attractive relative to the risk at today’s price. A holder may accept uncertainty to retain exposure before the evidence becomes conclusive, provided the position can survive a poor outcome.

Holding still commits capital. Our WATCH assessment does not become a blanket HOLD recommendation simply because someone already owns CC. If the only reasons to stay are the original purchase price and impressive institutional names, the investment case needs rebuilding.

**The case for passing** is straightforward for investors who need predictable income, a clear claim on business cash flows or a defensible intrinsic-value range today.

**Reducing or exiting deserves consideration** when the original thesis depends on automatic holder income, exclusive institutional adoption or permanently scarce supply. The evidence does not support those assumptions. A position too large to tolerate the uncertainty also needs a separate sizing decision.

## What We Will Watch Next

The useful milestones are a confirmed broader DTCC rollout followed by repeat usage; a consistent record of total burns versus total minting; clearer customer funding and concentration data; and verifiable locking, release and reward-rule implementation.

One successful launch can improve the network story. Sustained demand for the token at a sensible price is what improves the investment story.

Canton is working on a problem worth solving. The reason to own CC would be a well-supported belief that future demand to use and retain the token will exceed what today’s price reflects.

The most important connection still needs better measurement: recurring customer use translating into better economics per token. For now, patience earns its place in the portfolio process.
